The Camino de Santiago Finisterre Muxia

One of the things that makes Galicia so special is the amount of traditions, routes, tourist attractions, hidden villages and history that is hidden in this community. In this case, many people do not know that they should take the Camino de Santiago to Finisterre and Muxia. This is why we will talk a little about this pilgrimage, what you should carry in a backpack to avoid inconveniences on the way and what should be the route you should follow

Brief summary from Santiago to Finisterre and Muxia

The city of Santiago de Compostela is famous due to the ancient pilgrimage that began with the story that the remains of the Apostle Santiago were found, and the faithful of Christianity established this place as one of the main pilgrimage centers.
However, there is a pilgrimage route that starts from the Cathedral of Santiago to what was previously known as "the westernmost point of known land", that is, this was the end of the world for the Romans. Despite being a route with little historical support, many inhabitants of this area thought that the sun died there and they built an altar in honor of it.
On the other hand, a place close to the Camino de Finisterre is the Santuario da Barca located in Muxía, in which there were several apparitions of the Virgin Mary nearby. This is why many faithful, when completing the Camino de Santiago, want to complete the Camino de Finisterre and Muxía at the same time.

Stages from Santiago to Finisterre and Muxía

Like any other pilgrimage, this route can be a bit hard for people who are not used to this type of activity, but the beauty that each town hides along the way is unique. This is why starting from Santiago de Compostela, the first objective is to reach the town of Negreira, which has a rather medieval air. After taking a rest, you should start the route early to reach the small picturesque village of Olveiroa, spend the night in the place, and then start the route until you reach the modern municipality of Cee. Finally, there is only the route that leads to Cape Finisterre, Lires and Muxía (exactly to the Santuario da Barca).

What should I take to do this path?

The best thing to do for any hiker or pilgrim who wants to do this path is to complete it from Santiago to Finisterre and Muxía. However, any of our recommendations can be useful if you only go as far as Muxía or Finisterre. First we will give some tips that you should take into consideration before packing your luggage:

  • This path could take 5 days or more, if you walk 7 hours a day and do both routes.
  • On the way there are unevenness, humidity and a lot of nature
  • The weather is changeable and it could rain when you least expect it.
  • You must choose a season of the year that is comfortable, and that the content of the luggage will change depending on the season.
  • Remember to take care of your valuables such as telephone, cash, or documentation in a Zip-close plastic ball.
  • Do not carry so much weight, because the route will become much more complicated
Once knowing the previous points, we will begin with what is essential for the Camino de Santiago Finisterre Muxia:
  • First aid kit: accidents happen at the moment, and you must be prepared for everything.
  • Documentation: it can be ID, passport, driver's license and any document that shows your identity.
  • Walking stick: You don't have to be old to use a walking stick, and it will be very helpful to carry you up and down hills for hours.
  • Personal hygiene items: imagine walking 7 hours for 5 days in a row without taking a bath…unpleasant, right? So make sure you pack what you need but don't go overboard.
  • Clothing: if you go in summer, you should wear light clothing, but in winter a coat will always be necessary.
  • Snacks and sandwiches: There is nothing worse than going on a route hungry, or that it is 12 noon and you still have not reached your destination. This is why we recommend bringing light but filling snacks.

ROAD TO SANTIAGO FINISTERRE MUXIA

Once you have spent the night in Olveiroa, continue on your way to the next hospital village, it is there where you will find a fork to decide your destination: go first to Muxía, to later finish off the Camino in FINISTERRE, to go to Muxía you must take the indication that leads to Dumbría to continue from there.
